Our June 18th episode features a sneak preview of the Songs of Our Sea album. We’ll hear select tracks from the not-yet-released compilation CD that features a range of musicians who have been brought to Staten Island by life’s currents. Each track on the album connects to the waterscapes of coastal, maritime, and island life. Experiences with and expressions of water bind together a variety of artists navigating new renditions of old classics: from traditional North Indian monsoon poetry, to Afro-Cuban Santería rhythms, to instrumental surf rock, and so much more.
We’ll speak to three of the artists featured on the CD. Bob Wright will discuss his original sea shanty and his deep roots as a Staten Islander. Reverend Gayle Heyward will share with us a spiritual medley imbued with rivers of metaphor and her heritage as a daughter of Sandy Ground. Uthpala Eroshan will bring a percussive and melodic Sri Lankan wannam devoted to the conch shell.
